Mary Segal – Founder

Mary Segal moved from Santa Fe, NM to Sebastian Fl, the rest is history...

She had experienced art tours there and wanted to bringing it here in Sebastian.

That happened in 2013 when reaching to fellow artist friends, which included Sharon Morgan, Geoffrey Myers, Weldon Stout & Quentin Walter, Robert Johnson, Mary Segal, Rita Bernstein, and Richard Ramirez. Sadly, most are no longer with us but only in memory.

Mary was an avid gardener and loved incorporating her flowers and other organic materials in her pieces.

Mary had successfully open Red Door Art Studio, now closed.

Quote from Mary-

“In her artist's biography, Segal writes about coming to Sebastian, where she was inspired by "the colors of the tropical landscape, the abundance of water, rivers and ocean." A passionate gardener, Segal incorporates flowers, leaves and botanical forms in her paintings and prints.” "I'm looking forward to making some with passion vine leaves, and copper plant leaves with their crenulated edges," she says.

Below are excerpts of an article by Ll Angell in the TCPalm. This really covers much of her history.

“When Sebastian artist and teacher Mary Segal threw a party to celebrate last month's opening of her Red Door Art Studio, more than 50 friends and artists from Indian River and St. Lucie Counties gathered to explore the new gallery space and rental studios. “

“Years ago, Segal had an art studio in downtown Vero Beach, which she shared with several different artists.

"I did that for over 10 years and really enjoyed the collegiality of working with other artists," she says. "Working in a studio is conducive to creativity, and I want to have that again. The Red Door has its own entrance and both studios have doors, so there's always privacy."

The smaller studio is 125 square feet, and the larger one is almost 200 square feet. Both have windows and could be used for workspaces and exhibitions. “

“Pressing matters

Renters would also have use of the Conrad Etching Press in the kitchen. When Segal got the press 20 years ago, it took two strong men to move it.

"It's a hand press: a very well-tooled and well-constructed machine that delivers even pressure. That's what you need for printmaking," said Segal, turning the crank that rolls the press bed.”

“Segal has taught numerous classes and workshops at the museum since its founding as the Center of the Arts in 1986.

She has been an artist in the schools throughout Florida for decades. She plans a variety of printmaking and multi-media workshops at the Red Door this fall. She'll make the press available for rental purposes too. “

"You get that beautiful, raised line and embossed plate mark," says Segal.
